MSI's portable handheld console, the Claw A8, was compared to the Intel Lunar Lake-based Claw 8 AI+ model. While both devices share many similar hardware features, they differ in their processors. The AMD model features an 8-core, 16-thread Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor, while the Intel model uses an 8-core Lunar Lake Ultra 7 258V processor. Here are the results...

According to shared test figures, the Ryzen Z2 Extreme offers higher FPS than its competitor at a TDP level of 17W. The AMD-powered model shows an increase of up to 27% in some games like Monster Hunter Wilds, while the overall difference ranges between 5% and 7% in most scenarios. Notably, the Z2 Extreme offers a smoother and more consistent experience in terms of 1% low (lowest frame rates) performance.


In tests conducted at a power level of 30W, the Claw A8 achieves an average of 5.7% higher FPS values at 1080p resolution. When the power level is reduced to 17W, this difference increases to 7.4%.

For those who missed it, on the graphics side, the Radeon 880M APU operates with the RDNA 3.5 architecture and 16 CU (compute units), while Intel's Lunar Lake architecture comes with an Xe2-based GPU. While Lunar Lake is manufactured using TSMC's 3nm process, the Ryzen Z2 Extreme boasts a 4nm production process and clock speeds reaching 5.0GHz.

Meanwhile, the previous model of the Claw A8, the Intel Lunar Lake-based Claw A8 AI+, went on sale with a price tag of around €999. The Ryzen Z2 Extreme model is also available for pre-order in Europe at a similar price. Therefore, it will be available on the global market very soon.

What does the MSI Claw A8 Ryzen Z2 offer?


The Claw A8 comes with an 8-inch IPS touchscreen display with a resolution of 1920x1200, 500 nits brightness, and a refresh rate of 120Hz. It is equipped with up to 24GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory and up to 1TB of PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD. The device also features two USB4 ports, WiFi 7 + Bluetooth 5.3 wireless communication support, and a 6-axis IMU sensor.


One of the standout features of the new model is its WiFi 7 support. While MSI announced WiFi 6E support at Computex, the version listed in China comes with WiFi 7. On the audio side, it offers DTS-supported dual speakers and Hi-Res Audio features, while the battery is a 6-cell, 80Wh capacity unit. The Claw A8 weighs 765 grams and is available in two color options: “Polar Tempest” and “Neon Green.”
